Frequently Asked Questions:

How should I store my tent, awning or screen-room?

Make sure your tent or wing is completely dry before storing. (Storing a wet tent as short as 24 hours in warm weather is likely to start the process of mildew forming on the fabric.) If your product is not part of the RV pack your tent or wing in the stuff sack and place it in a cool, dry area, out of sunlight, and away from heat sources and rodents. If you product is built into your RV, you can store it wet for short periods of time, but you should store it in an open position until completely dry before packing it away for prolonged periods of time. Open and air out your tent or wing at least every 6 months to prevent odors and fabric deterioration.

How do I prevent mildew?

One of the easiest ways to damage your tent is not drying it as quickly as possible whenever it gets wet. Storing a wet tent as short as 24 hours in warm weather is likely to start the process of mildew forming on the fabric. Mildew can permanently damage the waterproof coatings by causing it to separate from the fabric, but mild to severe staining is more common. Mildew stains are often permanent. Even when your tent appears to be dry after use, you should deploy it until it is completely dry before storing. Never machine dry your tent as the heat can melt the fabric.

What's the best way to clean my tent?

Cleaning your tent is not necessary unless it has an offensive odor or becomes heavily soiled. If heavily soiled, the pressure from a regular garden hose will remove most loose dirt. For more severe cleaning, set up your tent and hand wash it with warm water, a sponge and mild, non-detergent soap. Do not use dishwashing liquid, detergent, bleach, pre-soaking solutions, or spot removers. Rinse well. Dry your tent by setting it up or hang it from a line. Never dry clean, machine wash or machine dry your tent. Any of these methods can remove all the waterproof coatings from the fabric.

Are tears are holes covered under warranty?

Thermarest RV does not consider damage to the tent fabric to be covered under our warranty. We will send out patch kits to dealers or customers to assist in making quality repairs, or repair them ourselves for a reasonable fee.

How do I repair tears?

You can do minor repairs in field using one of several alternatives. ThermarestRV offers waterproof, self-adhesive clear patches through your manufacturers warranty and parts departments. Seam sealers are also a good alternative for small holes or duct tape for minor, temporary field repairs. If you use duct tape be sure to remove it as soon as you are through with your trip, the adhesive will eventually eat away at the fabric and you will end up needing a larger patch. We recommend carrying at least one of these as a precaution. If you have a large tear, the ThermarestRV Product Service Center can arrange for your tent to be patched for a reasonable charge.

My tent is leaking but I cannot find the leak.

If the leak is indicated by a thin film of water on the inside of the tent, please check the section below on condensation. If your product is attached to your RV, check to see that the water is not coming from the seal between the tent, and the RV. You can often seal leaks of the installation or attachment hardware using clear silicone sealant. If the leaks are only during heavy winds or rains, it is possible that water is getting under a zipper flap. These types of leaks can often be prevented by carefully adjusting the tent flap when you set your tent up. We can e-mail you additional ideas for your specific tent or awning via e-mail if all else fails: cs@teardropgear.com

What causes condensation and how do I reduce it in my tent or screen-room?

Condensation is the build-up of moisture inside your tent due to differences between the inside and outside temperature. In your tent, it is caused by 3 main sources: * Weather Conditions: High humidity, low temperatures, and rainy conditions create the most condensation. * People: We produce about 1 - 2 pints of moisture in a night through breathing and skin evaporation. * Wet Environment: Wet ground or wet gear stored inside the tent.

The key to reducing condensation is ventilation. Fresh air has to flow into your tent and warm, moist air has to escape. Thermarest has designed a variety of ways to do this, but the most important things is to use unzip one of the covers over the mesh in order to allow the warmer moist air to escape. Many people zip up all of the vents in order to keep warmer air in, and this will create a larger heat differential between the air inside and outside the tent, and accelerate the condensation process.

How long will a tent last?

A tent's lifespan is directly connected to the amount you use it. A tent's biggest enemy is UV radiation (just like your skin). A tent that is left open for the summer may only last a few months, while a well taken care of tent, used occasionally under normal conditions, can last for many years. Thermarest has continuously increased the amount of UV protection we add to our tent materials to prolong the durable life of your tent. We also add stabilizer to prevent colors from fading due to prolonged UV resistance, but the more care you take in avoiding prolonged UV exposure, the longer it will take for the fabric colors to begin fading. Screenrooms and awnings only

How do I guy out my awning or screenroom?

Guying out your tent will provide more stability in windy or extreme conditions. To guy out your tent, run cord from the tent's grommet through the tensioner. Pass the cord around the stake and back through the tensioner, keeping the curved side of the tensioner toward the stake. Tie a knot at the end of the cord. To tighten cord, pull the tensioner up along the cord and release.
